Lopers take two from Regis

Kearney, Neb. - The Nebraska-Kearney women's basketball team made 11 three pointers, tying a season-high, and had a good overall day on the offensive end to breeze past Regis, 83-61, Saturday afternoon at the Health & Sports Center. UNK (7-13, 6-7 RMAC) wins its fourth in a row and is now tied with Chadron State, a 75-74 loser to Metro State today, for 4th place in the East Division. Mean while, Regis (9-12, 2-11 RMAC) has dropped four straight and eight of nine. In leading nearly the entire way, UNK finished the first half on a 13-4 run to open up a double digit lead, 43-29. The Rangers didn't get the deficit under 11 points the rest of the way with the Lopers lead ballooning to as much as 27 points. UNK shot 50 percent (30 of 60) for the game, the third time this year the team has made at least half its field goals. From beyond the arc, the Lopers were 11 of 27 (40.7 percent), just off the season best effort set against Mesa State (11 of 25) earlier this year Kearney also had a season-high 23 assists, out rebounded Regis by seven (39-32) and forced 20 turnovers. Wing Vanessa Leeper (Colorado Springs, Colo.) made seven of 10 shots to tally 19 points, one off her career-high, with fellow sophomore Debi Johnson (Elsie) scoring 15 points by making five of 12 three point shots. The Perkins County grad is only the sixth UNK women's player to reach triple digits in career made threes. At an even 100, Johnson joins current Omaha Marian head coach Beth Swift (247/1998-02), Taryn Ninemire (223/2001-04), Amy Mathis (164/2004-08), Liz Fischer (160/2003-07) and Kara Graham (117/1995-99) as Lopers in the 100 or more 3-point club.
