Kearney, Neb. - This weekend, the Nebraska-Kearney volleyball team will begin it's home season with the return of the UNK Fall Classic, presented by Runza/Holiday Inn Fall Classic.
The event will showcase programs from five different states, and four different conferences, in matches that take place from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The complete schedule is below.
On Friday, now 13th-ranked UNK (3-1) will take on MIAA powerhouse and 3rd-ranked Truman State (4-0) in the prime time match at 8:00 p.m..
This match has been declared a “Blue Out” in an effort to pack the Health & Sports Center with Loper blue. UNK would also like to remind fans that the official game day shirts are still available at the Antelope Bookstore for a limited time. Purchasing these t-shirts will make you eligible for giveaways throughout the year.
In 2004, Truman ruined UNK's perfect season (40-1), sweeping the Lopers in the national semifinals. A year later in Kearney, the Lopers retuned the favor, beating TSU in four sets in the national quarterfinals.
A veteran Truman team comes to town this weekend and is coming off impressive wins over two schools (Grand Valley State & North Alabama) who've recently won national championships. UNK opens the tournament at noon with a match vs.the Upper Iowa Peacocks.
For the 8:00 p.m match Saturday night, UNK will host “Fan Day”. After the match versus Incarnate Word (Texas), fans will be able to get autographs from players and coaches. Any youth in attendance will also be able to get their picture with their favorite players. In addition, fans can pick up the 2008 UNK volleyball poster.
