Elite Eight Tournament Underway

Kearney, Neb. – The last national quarter final game of the day at the 2008 NCAA Division II Women’s Elite Eight proved to be one of the best as the University of South Dakota Coyotes won a double-overtime thriller against Washburn University, 85-80.

This thrilling game -- already being mentioned as one of the best in arena and Elite Eight history -- was a national quarterfinal game of the NCAA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championships. The Elite 8 tournament is being held at the Health and Sports Center at the University of Nebraska – Kearney for the second straight year.

South Dakota (32-1), now riding a 30-game win streak, advances to the semi-finals on Thursday to face the Delta State Lady Statesmen (33-0) at 9:30 p.m. The game will be aired live by ESPNU.

The Lady Blues end the year at 26-7. Kearney, Neb.

The top-ranked Delta State Lady Statesmen had three starters score in double figures and used two second half runs to beat California University of Pennsylvania, 75-64, Wednesday night in a national quarterfinal game at the Health & Sports Center.

This was the third game of the 2008 Elite Eight, once again hosted by the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Delta (33-0) advances to the Final Four tomorrow night at 9:30 and will face South Dakota (32-1). The other national semifinal game will be between Alaska Anchorage and Northern Kentucky.

Both games will air live on ESPN U. Kearney, Neb. – The second quarter final game of the 2008 NCAA Division II Women’s Elite Eight matched up the Wingate University Bulldogs of Wingate, N.C., against Northern Kentucky University Norse from Highland Heights Ky.

The hot shooting of Northern Kentucky (51.7 percent) was too much for Wingate to handle as three players reached double figures for the Norse as they defeated the Bulldogs, 78-65.

Wingate finishes the season with a record of 26-8 and sees their 11-game win streak halted. WU also falls to 0-3 all-time in Elite 8 games, having also in the 1995 and 1996 national quarterfinals.

Northern Kentucky picks up their fourth straight win and is now 26-8 on the year. The Norse advances to the semi-finals on Thursday to face the Alaska Anchorage Seawolves at 7:00 p.m. The game will be aired live by ESPNU.

Kearney, Neb. - The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves pulled down 50 rebounds, including 26 offensive, and got double doubles from center Rebecca Kieplinski and guard Kalhie Quinones to edge Frankl in Pierce (N.H.), 71-65 in overtime, Wednesday afternoon in the Elite Eight at the Health & Sports Center. Anchorage (30-4), West Region champions, advances to the Final Four and will play Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. against Northern Kentucky. The Franklin Pierce Ravens, from the Northeast Region, end the year at 27-6. In a match-up of two schools making their Elite Eight debut, Anchorage used its advantage inside to offset NCAA Division II Player of the Year Johannah Leedham.
