Lawmakers favor fuel-tax hike

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ At the same time pump prices are rising, state lawmakers have decided that fuel taxes should increase by possibly 4 cents per gallon. The Legislature gave first-round approval to a spending bill and new method of taxing fuel that together could hike the price of fuel. Supporters say it is needed to help build and maintain roads now in jeopardy because current fuel-tax revenue is expected to remain flat and hasn't kept up with inflation. Should the bill (LB846) get final approval, there would be a new tax on the wholesale price of fuel. Lawmakers would still have to approve bigger budgets for the Department of Roads for the overall fuel tax to rise. They moved toward that Wednesday by giving first-round approval to spending roughly $16 million more on roads next fiscal year.
