Nebraska man honored for rescuing 3 people
COLUMBUS, Neb. (AP) _ A Columbus man is being honored for helping three people escape from a car that had accidentally backed into a Columbus park lagoon. Dale Bowen was at Pawnee Park with his wife and three children on Aug. 27. Authorities say he saw the car back into the lagoon and become submerged up to its roof. He ran into the water, used a pocketknife to cut the seat belt strap for the driver, then helped get a car door open so two more people could escape the water. For his heroism, Bowen was awarded the Challenge Coin Award by the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 72, the Columbus city police union.
