Neb. CSI chief's lawyer to work as public defender
Kofoed
PLATTSMOUTH, Neb. (AP) _ The attorney for an Omaha-based crime-scene investigator will be paid as a public defender during an evidence-tampering trial. Cass County District Judge Randall Rehmeier ruled Friday that Steve Lefler should be officially allowed to withdraw as David Kofoed's private attorney because he hasn't been paid. But Rehmeier then appointed Lefler to serve as Kofoed's public defender, so the trial could continue as planned next week. He will earn $70 an hour as a public defender. Kofoed told the judge that his living expenses and other legal fees he owes have kept him from paying Lefler in this case. Kofoed is accused of tampering with evidence in a 2006 Cass County case in which two men were wrongly charged in a double murder.
