Legislature gives budget final approval

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ State lawmakers on Friday gave final-round approval to a state budget that's now headed to Governor Dave Heineman's desk. Among the items Heineman is expected to scrutinize is an increase in funding for the state Department of Roads that could cause the fuel tax to increase by about 1 cent per gallon. When combined with another bill the Legislature supports that would tax wholesale fuel, the per-gallon fuel tax could increase by about 4 cents per gallon. The state is in the middle of a two-year budget cycle, so lawmakers didn't mold a new budget this session. Instead they approved changes to the existing budget. The total, two-year budget is about $6.8 billion. Instead of tapping a large cash reserve to help balance the budget, lawmakers plan on giving schools roughly $60 million less next year than they originally expected. ____
