Neb. is first in US in number of irrigated acres
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ The number of irrigated acres is rising in Nebraska, making it first in the nation for irrigation. The figures have been dropping in some other parts of the country. Agriculture economist Bruce Johnson says some areas of Nebraska are overirrigated and says significant limitations on future irrigation loom. He said in the June 10 issue of Cornhusker Economics that by the end of 2007, Nebraska had 8.5 million acres under irrigation. He says the state added 560,000 acres from 1997 to 2002 and 930,000 acres between 2002 and 2007. Many areas of the state have been designated as overappropriated, forcing restrictions on developing new acres for irrigation.
