Statewide testing measures advances in Legislature

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ Nebraska's one-of-a-kind approach to measuring the achievement of students is one step closer to being ditched. The Legislature on Friday gave second-round approval to a bill (LB1157) that would require uniform, statewide tests in reading, math and science in many elementary and high school grade levels. Nebraska's unique current method lets school districts create their own tests to measure achievement for the federal No Child Left Behind Act and for state purposes. In 2006, the U.S. Department of Education rejected it but later reversed course. Critics of the the locally devised testing say it makes it impossible to accurately compare districts and identify which curricula work best. ____
