Interlock devices for drunk drivers favored by lawmakers

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ People convicted of drunken driving for the first time might have to pass a breath test to turn on their cars. The Legislature gave first-round approval Wednesday to a bill (LB736) that would require first-time and subsequent DUI offenders to obtain permits for so-called ignition interlocks. Drivers must blow into the devices, and if they have been drinking alcohol, their cars won't start. Supporters say the devices keep drunk drivers who try to drive even when their licenses are revoked off the roads. DUI offenders whose licenses have been revoked for 90 days could apply for an interlock device after not driving for 30 days. Permit holders couldn't drive just anywhere _ their driving would be restricted to work, school or alcohol treatment. ____ On the Net: Nebraska Legislature: http://www.nebraskalegislature.gov
