Neb. town restricts campaign signs

BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) _ The city Bellevue south of Omaha is getting some complaints about its ordinance that prohibits campaign signs in front lawns until 30 days before an election. Last week, the city of Lincoln's mayor announced that city would no longer enforce a similar ordinance. That came after the Nebraska chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union took exception to the local law. Now, ACLU Nebraska is targeting Bellevue's law. Laurel Marsh with ACLU Nebraska says the U.S. Constitution guarantees freedom of speech _ not ``freedom of speech for a given period of time.'' The ACLU has fought such ordinances across the country with notable success. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) APNP-08-27-08 1436CDT<
