West Nile mosquitoes found in Dawson county

Two Rivers Public Health Department in Holdrege is reporting the first positive mosquito pool in the district in Dawson County. The insects were collected on July 21st and the pool tested positive for the West Nile Virus. No positive birds have been reported in the county or district at this time. Officials say the majority of human West Nile cases are usually reported in August and September. They say this the time to minimize the exposure to West Nile. So far, only one human case of West Nile has been reported in Nebraska. West Nile virus is transmitted to humans after they are bitten by a mosquito infected with the virus. Two Rivers officials say with frequent rainfalls and spending more time outside, preventive action needs to be taken to reduce the risk of being bitten by mosquitoes. Limit your time outdoors, especially around dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are more active. Secondly, if there is a need to be outdoors during these times wear protective clothing and use an insect repellant containing DEET, a chemical which is effective in keeping mosquitoes away.
