A Smithfield man now faces a charge of 2nd Degree Assault in connection with a July 3rd incident which a homemade cannon was discharged causing serious injuries to the face and head of a 36-year-old woman. Forty-four-year-old Doyle Daake was arrested by the Gosper County Sheriff's Office on Thursday.
Court records indicate Daake was charging the cannon with a black powder substitute and lighting it in Smithfield. Around 10:30 pm he moved the cannon to just outside of the village hall where many people were gathered and lit it. Kathy Garrelts of Gothenburg walked in front of the cannon and the concussion from it struck her.
Garrelts was listed in critical condition at a Lincoln hospital on Thursday. Daake's arraignment is set for July 24th in Gosper County Court. His bond is 10% of $5,000.
