Term limits still shaking out

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ Twenty-six state legislative seats are in play this year, most of them thanks to term limits passed by voters in 2000. Under the constitutional amendment, senators are limited to serving two consecutive four-year terms. Twenty members of the 49-seat, one-house Legislature were barred from seeking re-election in 2006. Fifteen more were ineligible to run for re-election this year. There are 74 people running for the 26 seats in play this year. That includes four people vying to replace Omaha Senator Ernie Chambers, the longest-serving lawmaker in state history after 38 years. The four looking to replace him are John Carter, Devin Santo, Dennis Womack and Brenda Council. Five incumbents -- Senators Gwen Howard and Rich Pahls of Omaha, Chris Langemeier of Schuyler, Deb Fischer of Valentine and Abbie Cornett of Bellevue -- face no challengers in today's primary. ___ On the Net: Nebraska Legislature: http://www.unicam.state.ne.us
