Ex-FSA employee pleads guilty to wire fraud
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ A former Farm Service Agency employee from Falls City has pleaded guilty to wire fraud over her handling of loan payments. Denise Schawang was indicted in May on 10 counts of wire fraud, but pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District County to one count in a deal with prosecutors. Schawang had worked as a program technician at the FSA office in Richardson County. The 45-year-old is accused in court documents of deliberately misrepresenting payments on a series of federal loans she and her husband had obtained. That resulted in a more than $44,000 in overpayments from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to the couple between fall 1999 and early 2007. Schawang faces up to 20 years in federal prison and a $250,000 fine when she's sentenced June 3.
