LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ An Omaha businessman has agreed to challenge Republican Gov. Dave Heineman, giving Nebraska Democrats a candidate. A Nebraska Democratic Party spokeswoman said Mark Lakers would file paperwork Friday to make his candidacy official.
The 50-year-old Lakers is president of Ag and Food Associates, which offers investment banking services to the agribusiness and food industries. Lakers is the first Democrat to join the race that includes the incumbent Heineman and two other Republicans, Paul Anderson and Christopher Geary, both of Omaha. It would be Lakers' first run for public office.
Heineman was elevated to governor from lieutenant governor when Mike Johanns resigned to become U.S. secretary of agriculture in 2005. Heineman was elected in 2006.
