Scottsbluff Police Monday identified Trevor Brown, a 17 year old Scottsbluff high school student, as the student brought an unloaded .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun to Scottsbluff High School. Brown has been cited for unlawful possession of a firearm on school grounds and unlawful possession of a firearm due to his age. Scottsbluff High Principal Galen Nighswonger confirmed Brown has been expelled from the school property for 365 days, as required by state statute. But Nighswonger says Brown will still have an opportunity to access educational opportunities through an on-line program used by the district.
Scottsbluff Police Captain Kevin Spencer says they are still trying to determine how the gun, which was taken during a burglary a couple years ago in Denver, was in the possession of Brown. Police and school district officials says Brown had possession of the gun at school "by accident". Pressed for more information Scottsbluff Assistant Vice Principal Matt Huck would only say they found no facts to verify Brown intended to use the weapon, sell it or trade it while it was at school.
The weapon was discovered by two boys on a privacy ledge after they entered a first floor restroom prior to the lunch break April 28th. Huck was praised by Spencer and High School Principal Galen Nighswonger for his review of security camera footage and interviews of students that helped narrow the focus of the investigation.
