OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ U.S. Sen. Mike Johanns is seeking support for a bill that would cut off all federal funding from community organization ACORN.
The Nebraska Republican has sent an invitation to all 83 senators who voted for his amendment earlier this week to block federal Housing and Urban Development Department money from ACORN. So far, he says, 15 senators have expressed interest in co-sponsoring the bill.
ACORN, which stands for the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, has come under fire for several voter-registration fraud cases. On Tuesday, Johanns asked the Justice Department to investigate ACORN.
Johanns dismissed criticism that his targeting of ACORN is just partisan politics, saying ACORN needs only to ``run a clean shop, and you won't get any attacks.''
