Judge may block part of new Neb. sex offender law
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) _ A new law that beefs up rules for sex offenders may not take effect Jan. 1 as planned, at least not in its entirety. U.S. District Judge Richard Kopf says he will issue his ruling next week in a case that challenges the constitutionality of Nebraska's revised sex offender registry law. It stems from a lawsuit filed recently on behalf of 20 sex offenders and 11 of their relatives or employers. A hearing on the lawsuit was held Wednesday. Their attorney, Stu Dornan, said Thursday that Kopf said he may block a provision that bars offenders from using social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook. Kopf also expressed concern about requiring offenders to consent to searches of their computers and other electronic communication devices.
