Nebraska governor stays out of affirmative action fray

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ The war of words over affirmative action in Nebraska probably won't include comments from Gov. Dave Heineman. Heineman says it's ``highly unlikely'' he'll take a position on the ballot initiative aimed at prohibiting state and local governments from giving preferential treatment to people on the basis of race, sex, ethnicity or national origin. Last week, Secretary of State John Gale said the initiative has more signatures than necessary to make it on the November ballot. The initiative has set off a bitter fight between supporters and opponents. California businessman Ward Connerly is behind the initiative. Heineman says he doesn't need to take sides on all issues and that ``there's been a lot of hyperbole on both sides'' of the affirmative action issue. ___ On the Net: Nebraska Civil Rights Initiative: www.nebraskacri.org Nebraskans United: www.nebraskansunited.org
