Alliance Chamber Announces Scholarship Winners
In the fall of 2007, the Ag Committee of the Alliance Chamber of Commerce started a fund raising campaign to fund three $500 scholarships for the 2008 school year. These scholarships were available to a graduating senior or college undergrad that attended Hemingford High School, Alliance High School or one other high school from an area community. The basic requirement is that the area of post-high school studies must be in agriculturally based studies. The inaugural program last year funded scholarships for the following three students: Bridger Chytka, a 2006 Hemingford High School grad; Blake Becker, 2008 AHS Graduate; and Janelle Read, 2008 Crawford High School grad. Blake Carol Becker currently attends the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and is studying Agriculture Education. At UNL she is participating in the Dean’s Scholars in Experiential Leadership, FFA Alumni, and Ag Ed Club. Blake also currently serves as a 2008-2009 Nebraska State FFA Officer. Blake is the daughter of Pamela and John Becker of Alliance. The $500.00 Scholarship awarded by the Ag Committee was matched by the Alliance Public Schools Foundation for a total of $1,000.00. Bridger Chytka is currently a junior at Chadron State College, majoring in Range Management and Hydrology. He is also a member of the CSC rodeo team competing in calf roping and team roping. Following his education at Chadron, Bridger plans to pursue a Master’s Degree in Hydrology. The $500.00 Scholarship awarded to Bridger was matched by the Hemingford Public Schools Foundation for at total of $1,000.00. Janelle Read is attending Chadron State College and is majoring in Agricultural Business with a minor in Animal Science. Janelle is participating in Ag Club, Wildlife Club, and Night of Country Swing Dance Club. The Ag Committee is currently having their campaign to raise funds for the next round of scholarships in 2009. The fund is the result of a raffle that has a Honda ATV as top prize with a 52” flat screen TV, $1,000.00 in Alliance Chamber Bucks, a Holland Epic Grill, 2 $300.00 fuel certificates, and 2 halves of a butchered hog as the rest of the prizes. There are 300 tickets available and the drawing will be at the Championship game of the Alliance High Holiday Tournament on December 30th. To find out more information on future scholarships or the 2008 Ag Committee Scholarship raffle contact the Chamber at 308-762-1520.
