Favorable Reaction Expressed by Many

Reviewers worked overtime following Thursday’s announcement of the new farm bill – checking out the areas they are most interested in. The American Farm Bureau Federation had to take a much wider view than most, because of the diverse interests of its members. Farm Bureau President Bob Stallman says - the bipartisan farm bill package strikes a key balance. The bill continues to provide a basic, no frills safety net for America’s farmers and it increases support for hungry Americans and the environment.

The Farm Bill will reauthorize the Commodity Credit Corporation Bioenergy program, a key legislative priority for the U.S. biodiesel industry. National Biodiesel Board CEO Joe Jobe says - the CCC Bioenergy program provides support to biodiesel producers to help offset the costs of the feedstock used to produce biodiesel. He says - the 300 million dollars provided for the program will help bring some stability to the industry.

National Cotton Council Chairman Larry McClendon, an Arkansas producer/ginner, says the NCC is concerned about the potential adverse impact of the significant change made in the means test which will become effective with the 2009 crop. Still, McClendon says - while we are anxious to learn more about the details.

The National Corn Growers Association praised the new farm bill for its - very positive reforms. NCGA President Ron Litterer says, - we’re happy to see the conference committee preserved the new Adjusted Crop Revenue Election program, The optional ACRE program addresses the increasing levels of risk farmers are facing with a safety net that offers more reliable protection against crop losses and against increasingly volatile commodity markets.

The National Association of Wheat Growers remains concerned over the Direct Payment Program. Until more is known, NAWG President David Cleavenger says his organization will take no position.

And National Milk Producers Federation CEO Jerry Kozak says this bill is the - best possible outcome for our members.
