Grazing coalition to bring nationally noted speaker

ELMWOOD, Neb. — Concerned about invasive weeds on your land? Want to improve grazing strategies and improve conservation? Then get on board for the Reeves Project Tour on Sept. 5. The daylong event sponsored by the Nebraska Grazing Lands Coalition will start at 9 a.m. at the American Legion Hall in St. Paul, Neb., with featured presenter and author Greg Judy of Clark, Mo., sharing his experiences utilizing mob grazing and holistic management. Judy owns and leases 1,400 acres of land on 10 farms and grazes cow-calf pairs along with hair sheep, goats and Tamworth pigs. He is the author of the books Comeback Farm and No Risk Ranching. At 11:30 a.m. a barbeque luncheon featuring samples of cabrito – roasted goat meat – will be served, and then participants will load buses to travel to the Reeves Ranch north of Palmer. Demonstrations on the ranch site will include John Holman of Dogs4Ewe showcasing his award-winning working Border collie dogs; Dave Carr with the Central Platte Natural Resources District discussing prescribed burning; Dana Larsen with the Natural Resources Conservation Service reviewing effective rangeland monitoring; and Brad Prauner with Gallagher USA explaining various electrical fencing systems. In a special presentation, Michelle Wendell of G.O.A.T.S. Inc., will discuss the grazing benefits of her 600 goats that will be on-site, and participants will get to observe the herd transferred to a fresh patch of leafy spurge and go to work. The ranch portion of the tour will conclude at 4 p.m., with buses scheduled to return to St. Paul at approximately 5 p.m. Cost to participate in the entire day is $20 if registered before Sept. 1. After Sept. 1 cost is $25.
