Bipartisan Ag Mediation Bill Introduced
Senate Ag Chair Tom Harkin and Kansas Senator Pat Roberts have introduced bipartisan legislation to continue authorization of USDA’s Certified State Agriculture Mediation program for another five years. Harkin says the state-level mediation programs have a strong record of helping ag producers and lenders fairly resolve what might otherwise be unmanageable debt problems without going through expensive, time-consuming and adversarial legal proceedings. He’s hopeful the program is extended so that farmers and ranchers continue to benefit from the practical, manageable ways to address their loan problems.According to information from Harkin’s office - mediation programs address issues in a confidential and non-adversarial setting outside the traditional legal process of foreclosure, bankruptcy, appeals and litigation. Thirty-five states now participate in the program.
