Meat packer demands money from Herreid man
HERREID, S.D. (AP) _ Tyson Fresh Meats is seeking to collect nearly $16,000 in court costs from a South Dakota man who helped bring a price-fixing lawsuit against the nation's largest meatpackers. U.S. marshals have placed a legal notice on the door of Herman Schumacher's Herreid home. It will remain until he pays the money approved by a federal judge. Schumacher says it's embarrassing, but he doesn't have any legal recourse and must pay the money. Schumacher says Tyson is the only packer he's heard from, but he and the other plaintiffs in the lawsuit could be made to pay about $45,000 to cover the expenses of all three packers. Schumacher, Michael Callicrate of Kansas and Roger Koch of Nebraska alleged that large meat packing companies underpaid producers for live cattle, and won a $9.25 million federal jury verdict in 2006. The verdict eventually was overturned by an appeals court that said the lawsuit failed to show that the companies intentionally manipulated or controlled prices. ___
