Did you know that March is National Nutrition Month ® ?
National Nutrition Month ® is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the American Dietetic Association (ADA). The campaign focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.
Registered Dietitian (RD) Day, also celebrated in March, increases the awareness of Registered Dietitians as the indispensable providers of food and nutrition services and recognizes RDs for their commitment to helping people enjoy healthy lives.
During National Nutrition Month ® and beyond, the key to a healthful diet is improving your nutrition from the ground up.
Here are some important tips and information to remember:
- Eating right doesn’t have to be complicated; start with the basics. A healthy eating plan emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat or fat-free dairy and includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans and nuts. It is also low in saturated fats, trans-fats, cholesterol, salt and added sugars.
- Make calories count by thinking nutrient-rich rather than “good” or “bad” foods. Most choices should be packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber and lower in calories. Be aware of portion sizes, even low-calorie foods can add up when portions are too large.
- Focus on variety by eating foods from all the food groups. Fruits and vegetables can be fresh, canned or frozen. Look for locally grown produce that’s in season ( http://www.agr.state.ne.us/pub/apd/produce.htm ). Vary protein choices with more fish, beans and peas. Include at least three servings of whole grain cereals, breads, crackers, rice or pasta daily.
- Balancing physical activity with a healthful diet is the best recipe for managing weight and promoting fitness. During March set a goal to be physically active at least 30 minutes daily and stick with it for the rest of the year.
- Make the most of family mealtime. Eating meals together provides the opportunity to help children develop a healthy attitude toward food. It also enables parents to serve as role models, introduce new foods and establish a regular meal schedule.
