Environmental officials to discuss sludge probe
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) _ Health and environment officials say sludge from a St. Joseph, Mo., tannery is probably not the cause of brain tumors in the Cameron area. Department of Natural Resources Director Mark Templeton says tests in four northwest Missouri counties where sludge from Prime Tanning was used as fertilizer did not contain high enough levels of chromium 6, a known carcinogen, to pose a health problem. At a news conference Wednesday, officials from the Environmental Protection Agency, DNR and Missouri Department of Health discussed their investigation into concerns from residents in the Cameron area about a high number of brain tumors. The officials said sludge at the tannery is not at fault.
