Nebraska wheat harvest underway

Harvesters in south central Nebraska will likely spend 4th of July in the fields with less than 5 percent harvested. Test cutting is widespread and early indications show strong yields, averaging 70 - 80 bushels with moisture at 13 to 13 1/2 percent.
Harvest looks to be two weeks away in the Panhandle. Statewide more than 3/4ths of the wheat has turned color, six days behind the average of 87 percent. Wheat ripe is 13 percent, six days behind the average of 32 percent.
Wheat conditions rated 8 percent poor to very poor, 19 percent fair and 73 percent good to excellent, which exceeds last year's 58 percent.
