Poet CEO Predicts Biofuels Could Replace Gasoline
Poet CEO Jeff Broin told those attending the 2010 RETECH Renewable Energy Conference in Washington, D.C. that as agricultural yields increase and cellulosic ethanol is commercialized; - biofuels could realistically replace the use of gasoline in this country. Broin said combining the tremendous potential of both grain and cellulosic ethanol with technology, we could produce over 140-billion gallons of ethanol. That’s about the same amount of gasoline used in the U.S. every year.Broin warned that if we don’t use this excess grain for things such as biofuels, we’ll be back to the days of paying farmers not to produce, which in turn will burden U.S. taxpayers while reducing investment and innovation in farming.
At the same meeting, White House Energy & Climate Change Advisor Carol Browner said success with clean energy depends on - a national renewable standard and a cap on dangerous pollutants that contribute to global warming.
