Yet more waiting for Neb., Kan. in river dispute
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ Officials in Kansas and Nebraska expecting a referee's report on their dispute over the Republican River have been left empty-handed. The report from a Colorado water expert hadn't arrived by Tuesday evening as anticipated, leaving the two states with more hand-wringing over the issue that has drug on for years. The arbitrator is supposed to rule on whether Kansas' demand for $9 million from Nebraska and a shut-down of irrigation wells in Nebraska's portion of the river basin is reasonable. But the decision won't be legally binding, so if the state's don't agree, Kansas can take Nebraska to court. Kansas alleges Nebraska has overused Republican River water and violated a compact between the states.© 2010 The Nebraska Rural Radio Association. All rights reserved.
