Western Sugar fire in Billings quickly contained
Published Monday, October 13, 2008 at 04:59 PM

A fire at the Western Sugar factory in Billings, Montana caused about $35,000 in damage. Firefighters were called to Western Sugar at about 10 p.m. Sunday after workers found a fire inside one of the factory's pulp dryers. Fire Marshal Bill Tatum says machinery sustained moderate damage from fire and smoke. Tatum says the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Three employees were working at the dryer at the time of the fire. One was treated and released from a local hospital for possible smoke inhalation. All three employees reported for work the next day for their regular shift.
The fire occurred in the dust collecting system of the pulp dryer. The smoldering of the pulp generated smoke, but caused little physical damage.
The fire did not cause any business interruption to the beet operation or sugar production at the facility. Cleanup and repairs to the dryer are expected to be completed by late Tuesday or early Wednesday of this week , at which time drying operation will resume. The pulp pellet production was diverted to the press pulp during this time.
