House Ag Looks Into Dramatic Movements in Commodity Markets
Published Friday, May 16, 2008 at 04:49 AM
The House Ag General Farm Commodities Subcommittee met to review the source of volatile price movements in the ag and energy markets Thursday. Chairman Bob Etheridge noted that the dramatic swings in energy prices and commodities futures are resulting in higher prices at the pump and grocery store. To maintain confidence in the markets and to provide more stable prices for farmers and consumers - he says steps must be taken.

Subcommittee Ranking Member Jerry Moran says the hearing provided an opportunity to hear the concerns of market participants - review the findings of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission - and determine if there are ways to adjust the regulatory structure to ensure the markets are operating properly.

Three panels of witnesses testified on commodity exchange price volatility - as well as the effects on the agricultural and energy supply chains.
