Western Neb. wheat farmers waiting to harvest
NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (AP) _ Wheat farmers in Western Nebraska are still waiting to harvest their crop _ weeks after the crop is normally already in hoppers.
Shawn Sullivan harvests wheat in southern Lincoln County. He says producers are waiting for their crops to turn before they can start up their combines.
Cool, damp weather is being blamed for the wheat harvest delay. Sullivan says it could still be another week before he gets into his fields.
He says the weather is not all bad news for wheat farmers. He says the cooler temperatures will help with test weights, because high heat can shrink wheat berries.
The Nebraska Wheat Board predicts statewide wheat yields to be above average with prices in the $7 and $8 range.
